The “House
Critters” Blue Booby’s’ Outing
Normally the
house critters did things together, so where Henrietta Bobbie Bunny was so were
the rest of the gang that included Blue Booby, Big Bunny, Ducky Duck and Rainy
Reindeer. Today started out different, as Blue was
missing when the rest of them got up.
He had
actually planned this yesterday and knew Bob would go outside early today. When
Bob went out to the kitchen he noticed that the ten dollar bill he had put on
the counter to give the delivery guys that were coming later a tip was not
there and wondered about it while he went out to get the emptied trash can.
Blue had decided on a trip to the Apple Barrel for donuts. Sounds like a funny
place to go for donuts, but they make very tasty apple cider donuts that are
rolled in sugar and cinnamon. He
remembered Ducky’s issue with crossing the street and had a similar problem.
The Apple Barrel was on the opposite side of the street, but the sidewalk that
went all the way up the street to it was on their side of the street. It made
sense that all sidewalk beat going through some lawns and being in the road for
the last part of the walk, which by the way was all uphill!
Blue waddled
like a duck, but much faster as he had longer legs which were good, because it
was three times as far away as Ducky had gone on his walk to the outlet. On this side of the street there were two
streets to cross and just like Ducky he knew to look both ways and then check
again, because cars were sneaky. The first side street had no traffic, however,
the second one was busy at this time of morning and he had to wait for a lot of
cars. If Blue had understood the small flashing lights on the cars he could
have crossed much sooner, but better to be slowed down than run over. Finally he
could see the place, but now the walk got quite steep and Blue decided to go
even father up on the hill to see traffic better. When Blue got to the crossing
spot he could look both ways at the same time and after a few cars went by got
across just fine.
There were
quite a few humans in the shop and when one came out Blue went in, this was
necessary as the knob on the screen door was impossible for a critter with a beak
and no paws, if it had been a handle he would have been fine. The human behind
the counter got him a half dozen donuts and Blue passed her the money he had
brought, she noticed that the change might be a problem and put it in a small plastic
bag that went into the bag with the donuts. Ducky picked up the bag in his beak
and she let him out the door. Now he had to get back home, which started out
with getting back across the street. Luck was with him, when he got to the chosen
crossing place there was no traffic and he just waddled across to the sidewalk.
Everyone thinks that going downhill is easier then uphill, but according to web
footed critters like Ducky and Blue this is not true. Blue found that the bag of donuts was hitting
him on every step, so he tried carrying it under a wing. This was better, but
he knew he looked silly with one wing next to his body and the other bumped out
like a human with a back pack under their arm. By now he was at the cross
street that was very busy on the way up the street, it was empty so not only
did he just cross it he also did the same at the next one.
In the house
the rest of the critters had looked all over for Blue. Of course they looked
upstairs, but they were so concerned they even looked in the basement. Well at
least they called out his name from the bottom stair step, because the basement
scared all of them. It was then that the doorbell rang scaring the heck out of
them and a mad dash up the stairs into the kitchen just as Barb was coming to
open the door. There was a commotion when they saw it was Blue and an even
bigger one when they found out he had donuts for them. Turned out the nice lady
at the shop had given him a bakers half dozen, which was seven, meaning that
critters and humans got donuts. Bob at this time realized where the money he
had left on the kitchen counter had gone, but it had been used for a good cause
so he did not scold Blue!
